This course introduction is available on this page.

This teaching is carried out in the form of problem-based and project-based learning. Several workshops will allow you to acquire knowledge and know-how. In consolidation, you will have a project to work on at the end of this course.

The teaching material at your disposal consists of this website and books available at the library (cf. page ressources).

Objectives

Expected learning outcomes

At the end of this teaching you should be able to:

  • Identify the audience
  • Identify the message and deliver it in a synthetic way
  • Practice the Big Idea Concept
  • Build a synopsis of an explanatory analysis with a storyboard
  • Choose a graph that is relevant to the data and the message to be transmitted
  • Know how to visually represent different types of graphs by applying good practices
  • Know the basic principles of Gestalt psychology
  • Apply the basic rules of decluttering
  • Leverage the preattentive attributes to give the expected focus on graphs
  • Avoid information overload
  • Analyze why we enjoy and retain a story
  • Apply storytelling principles to captivate your audience in a sustainable way
  • Build a three-act story

Skills

The skills addressed are as follows:

  • Solve a complex problem by combining theory and practice [CG 2]
  • Communicate [CG 9]
  • Integrate organizational issues into decisions and actions [CG 11]

Assessment

Principles

The evaluation will take the form of the restitution of a project work carried out in pairs on a freely chosen subject.

The evaluation is individual and is based on the following elements:

  • To reach the [Achieved] level:
    • make a 3-minute presentation (per person) with a clear “big idea”, targeting a clearly identified stakeholder and presenting a coherent story based on well-designed visuals.
    • deliver the day before the defence (for each student) the following deliverables on Moodle: big idea sheet, storyboard sketching pad (or story template), dataviz, and the slides in PDF format.
  • To reach the level [Beyond Expectations] will require reflexivity:
    • At the end of the defences, you will have to upload on Moodle your evaluation of another student (who will be assigned to you on the day of the defenses).
    • Your evaluation should assess each of the given criteria; you will have to argue your position about both the positive and negative aspects; you will also have to make recommendations to your colleague and help her/him improving the presentation.
    • The quality of your argumentation and your recommendations will allow you to unlock the upper level of your own evaluation.
    • This document will have no impact on the assessment of the work of the evaluated student. Just be fair and honest and constructive!

The narrative arc makes sense
The story focuses on 1 Big Idea, and only 1 Big Idea
The speech relies on an appropriate visual to present the problem and the solution
The communication is free of misspellings and grammar mistakes
Data visualization (Solve a complex problem by combining theory and practice [CG 2])
The choice of type of data representation makes sense given the data and what is being communicated
Visual clutter is minimized/absent
Focus et affordances are effective
